In this talk, Janine de Novais will overview her on-going work on Brave Community, which she defines as the process through which students rely on academic grounding to develop the intellectual courage and interpersonal empathy that challenging and productive learning about race requires. She will argue that, while the concept originates from her recent ethnographic study of higher education classrooms, as a critical pedagogy, Brave Community responds to persistent questions at the intersection of racism and education. Chief among these is the question of how best to train teachers who will have the will and the skill to ensure all their students, but especially those vulnerable to racial and cultural marginalization, can feel whole and empowered in school.
