"What does dopamine mean?"
Dopamine is famously involved in reward - but how exactly? An important theory argues that dopamine pulses signal “reward prediction errors” - vital learning signals in computational accounts of adaptive behavior. However this theory says nothing about the critical role of dopamine in ongoing movement and motivation to obtain rewards, not just learning. I will discuss our recent experimental investigations of dopamine’s multiple roles, including evidence for a dissociation between midbrain dopamine cell firing and forebrain dopamine release.
