Candide: A Comic Operetta in Two Acts

Scottish Opera Version (1988)

Music by Leonard Bernstein

Book adapted from Voltaire by Hugh Wheeler

Lyrics by Richard Wilbur

Additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, John LaTouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, and Leonard Bernstein

Young idealist Candide has been taught that everything happens for a reason, that all things have a purpose and that purpose is always good.  Then his home is destroyed by an invading army, killing his entire family, including his new fiancée, and setting the naive young man off on a treacherous journey far and wide. Along the way, he experiences War! Earthquakes! Disease! A woman with one buttock! All set to some of Bernstein’s most effervescent, heart-wrenching music. Join us for this brilliant musical send-up of 18th-century vices and morality — which may feel strangely familiar — in this “best of all possible worlds.”

Sponsored by the Mary Cortner Ragland Master Series Fund and presented with gratitude to a Blair graduate and to the Sartain Lanier Family Foundation for generously supporting the school
