The Graduate School is again hosting a workshop for students interested in or involved in the early stages of graduate study, in disciplines supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
This session focuses on the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP), with a goal of encouraging eligible Vanderbilt students to apply for these fellowships. The GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in fields supported by NSF.
Eligible students are those either planning to enroll in graduate school or who, as of August 1, 2018, have not yet completed more than 12 months of full-time graduate study. The GRFP is available only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The fellowships provide three years of financial support over a 5-year period and include an annual stipend of $34,000.
This year’s application deadlinesare in late October. Workshop topics include the NSF program guidelines and application process, competitive writing strategies, and how to get organized to meet the NSF deadline. Panelists include current NSF Fellows at Vanderbilt and faculty who have mentored graduate students who have won NSF fellowships and/or served recently as scientific reviewers for these NSF applications.
Following the workshop, refreshments will be served in the Adams Atrium for all current NSF Fellows and workshop participants, to network and learn more about the program and the various VU resources available to assist in writing and submitting proposals.
Students are encouraged to preview the grant guidelines to determine if they are eligible for the competition (citizenship, stage of graduate study, field of study). The NSF program solicitation and a number of useful references are available on the NSF GRFP website.
Pre-registration for the workshop is encouraged. Please use the registration form, which includes questions to confirm eligibility for the fellowship.
