The Blair Voice Faculty
From the Bard to Britten
After the death of prolific composer Henry Purcell in 1695, English composers largely fell silent until the mid-late 1800s, when they entered a golden age of composition. This musical reawakening produced a staggering number of art songs in addition to many compositions in other genres. These compositions have enjoyed tremendous popularity in the years since and continue to be a standard for well-crafted song, paired with powerful and engaging poetry. This literature contains stories of love and loss, the mystic and the mundane, conquest, duty, war, peace and, of course, the humorous! Come experience the beauty and elegance of English Art Song as we present the timeless work of English composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, including works by Butterworth, Finzi, Ireland, Gurney, Bridge, Vaughan Williams, and Britten, paired with the poetry of Shakespeare, De la Mare, Tennyson, Rossetti and Houseman.
This event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the West Garage (2500 Children's Way) free of charge.
