Over the course of the spring semester, six Buchanan Library Fellows worked on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) projects in the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries. Please join us on Wednesday, April 18 at 3:00 pm to hear the Fellows present on their projects and celebrate their accomplishments.
Students identified interdisciplinary questions amenable to spatial solutions, learned how to collect and curate geographic information, and designed real-world mapping applications. They identified key issues in their campus and volunteer work—everything from Vanderbilt theatrical performances to Fire Department EMS call data –or turned to social justice issues and politics--Open Table Nashville data; Salafi-jihadist training camps in Libya; and poverty alleviation initiatives in Mexico—and projects that mapped family histories. The results show the range of ways that geographic data can be used across disciplines.
