Driving While Black Report

a report on racial profiling in metro Nashville police department traffic stops

Gideon’s Army is a Nashville nonprofit that works to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline through grassroots community organizing and reshaping the criminal justice system. In October 2016, Gideon’s Army released the Driving While Black report. The report was produced by a team of local scholars, lawyers, and activists. In this presentation, the findings of the report will be discussed—including updated data—and the collaboration that made the report possible. Since the publication, Gideon’s Army has implemented restorative justice programs in the juvenile courts and has been a driving voice behind the Citizen’s Oversight Board of the Metro Nashville Police Dept. These initiatives and the role of community-academic partnerships will be highlighted.
