Subcortical Origins of Cortical Plasticity

Injuries to the dorsal columns of the spinal cord in adult monkeys lead to brain-wide plasticity. Deafferented representations in the somatosensory cortical areas get reactivated by intact inputs from the face. Similar reorganization takes place in the ventroposterior nucleus of the thalamus and cuneate nucleus of the brain stem. Our results show that reorganization in the cuneate nucleus is the key change that cascades upstream leading to reorganization in the higher areas of the brain. We further show that the nature of reorganized receptive fields at different levels undergoes transformation as the reorganized inputs ascend from the brain stem to the cortex.
