Addressing Homeless in Nashville

Thursday, October 12, 2017,

  • Location: MRB-IV 1230A/B

Homeless advocates estimate that there are over 20,000 people experiencing homelessness in Nashville. This means you could fill every seat in Bridgestone Arena with all the men, women, and children who are unhoused in Nashville.

Did you know that:

  • Homelessness in Nashville rose 9.8% from 2015 to 2016.
  • People experiencing homelessness have an average life expectancy as low as 41 years and are 3-4 times more likely to die prematurely than their housed counterparts. - National Health Care for the Homeless Council
  • In 2016, 87 people from Nashville’s homeless community died.

Do you want these statistics to change? Do you want to contribute to addressing these needs in our community?

Join Medical Ethics, Law, and Policy, Physicians for Human Rights, Homeless Health Services, and Open Table Nashville for lunch on Thursday 10/12 to learn more about homelessness in Nashville and how you can get involved in addressing this inequality. Specifically, we will be learning more about a recent bill that was introduced in Nashville's City Council to open emergency shelters when it reaches freezing outside. See the bill here: http://www.nashville.gov/mc/ordinances/term_2015_2019/bl2017_912.htm. Come enjoy some Taziki's (sponsored by CCO) and learn about what work is being done to help our friends experiencing homelessness across the city!
