"Data Science in Practice:  Essential Skills and Training for an Evolving Field"

Data Science is a constantly shifting landscape where the tools, approaches, and even the understanding of what data science can do are evolving. An organization’s data science needs change as they mature in their willingness and ability to consume, adopt, and deploy advanced analytics solutions. The data scientist that would be successful in a mature organization may well fail in an organization new to data science. Data scientists can also play different roles in an organization: journeyman predictive model builder, consultant, software engineer, to developer of new modeling algorithms. An essential set of skills are common to all successful data scientists, and understanding the range of roles and types of organizations in which a data scientist wishes to work helps determine the complete inventory of skills needed for success.

Dr. Spencer-Smith received his PhD from Indiana University in Psychology and Cognitive Science in 2001 and was a Fellow at the Beckman Institute. After some time as a faculty member in Psychology at the University of Illinois, he began his career in data science at HCA. He will talk about his career trajectory from mathematical psychology and cognitive science to data science, what data science is, preparation for careers in data science, and the kind of data science work done at HCA. https://www.linkedin.com/in/jesse-spencer-smith-7092a0/
