Maytha Alhassen will deliver a speech and join a panel of local leaders who work with refugees to advance our understanding of who is affected by the refugee crisis, how they're responding, and what our moral obligations are to support them. Ms. Alhassen is a Syrian-American journalist who has contributed to CNN, the Huffington Post, and Al-Jazeera, and has presented at South by Southwest. She is a doctoral candidate at USC. In her work, she "explores historical encounters between black internationalism and the Arab diaspora [including Malcolm X], critical race studies, transnational social movements, the media and oral history narratives" (Free Press Action Fund).
